Why We Don’t Use GMOs
Clif Bar doesn’t source ingredients with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for any of the foods we make.
We want to be a catalyst for change in creating a healthy, just and sustainable food system. Organic, sustainable alternatives exist to help meet the world’s growing demand for nutritious food in a way that protects people’s health and the planet’s natural resources.
We Choose Organic
Organic food connects healthy people to a healthy planet. Organic farming practices avoid synthetic fertilizers and toxic, persistent pesticides; preserve soil and water; protect biodiversity and strictly prohibit the use of GMOs. In short, organic means non-GMO and so much more.
More than 70 percent of the ingredients Clif Bar purchases are certified USDA organic. The USDA’s National Organic Program bans the use of GMOs in organic agriculture from seed to farm to table. Any food with organic certification, including the USDA organic seal as well as the claim “Made with Organic,” will meet these non-GMO requirements. In fact, all organic farms are tested for GMOs before earning organic certification.
We also go one step further to keep GMOs out of our food. Clif Bar requires all of our ingredient suppliers—even the organic ones—to provide us with a written “non-GMO” affidavit.
We Support GMO Labeling
You have the right to know if your food contains GMOs. We actively support national GMO labeling efforts like “Just Label It” and federal “Right to Know” legislation, as well as state initiatives in California, New York, Oregon and Washington.
