Catt Sadler Talks Equal Pay
The gender wage gap exists in almost every industry and Hollywood is no different. Stars are speaking out more than ever. Someone at the center of these conversations is journalist and Equal Pay Advocate Catt Sadler.
Her experience in the past year has shown her the importance of women using their voices to stand up for the salary they deserve. After learning only 30% of women negotiate their salary, Catt has used this statistic to fuel her latest endeavors bringing awareness to the gender wage gap. She’s using her voice to empower women all over the world and show how they can improve their own opportunities.
We sat down with her to chat about her passion and advocacy for equal pay.
WHY IS EQUAL PAY IMPORTANT TO YOU?
To me, equal pay is very simple. It is about what is right, and what is fair. There is no reason why any woman should be paid or valued less simply because of their gender.
I had to go through this, my own experience, to learn and ultimately I came out on the other side feeling this responsibility to contribute to the community and use my voice in a way that could really change the landscape for the future.
If I don’t use my voice, if we don’t use our platforms, if this movement doesn’t continue, then we won’t have changed anything for the next generation.
WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE WOMEN WANTING TO ADVANCE THEIR CAREER?
Be your own biggest advocate and use your voice. Bet on yourself and make it known every single day to yourself and those around you. Go knock on the doors of your managers and talk to them.
Your voice is your power.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN HER JOB SEARCH?
My advice would be to aim high (with your salary) and to set those negotiation expectations from the very beginning. If you don’t get a fair and solid salary in the early days, you’re just going to be playing catch-up for the rest of your career.
Start declaring what you’ll accept and what you will not – you can only grow from there.
WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING WITHIN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW IN REGARDS TO GENDER EQUALITY?
Well, there’s a collective sisterhood joining together and organizing. I think we’ve seen that in recent months. There’s so much power when women get together, share stories, share frustrations, and raise their voices.
We all have to walk the walk, we can’t just talk the talk. And I think that’s actually happening in a very real way for the first time in a long time.
